Set after Mattie Ross is bitten by a snake and then rescued from the pit. I haven't changed much from the original scene from Charles Portis's book and the Coen brothers' film, but I thought I'd flesh it out a bit. Potentilla flowers symbolise hope, honour, strength, power, loyalty, courage, luck and also a beloved daughter. Mattie had or was all of those things.

Three years have ed. After a great fire claims her family's farm, Mattie finds herself on the hunt again, this time to find the man who violated her mother's sister and bring him to justice. Along the way, old relationships are rekindled, and Mattie is swept up into a blazing romance and the greatest adventure she has ever had.

Rooster Cogburn was the meanest marshal around. He was pitiless, double tough, and loved to pull a cork; fear didn't enter his thinking. Except when, one day, it did. And all because of one stubborn young girl that somehow wormed her way into his hard heart.

This is about a space cattle drive where a yearling calf falls into a spring where the herd is drinking. Then Trellin (John Wayne) twirls his lasso to the calf who catches it in his teeth. Then John Wayne pulls him in. It's about the heroism of a cowboy on the open range.

In the epilogue, Rooster is working at the circus, and the Sheriff comes to visit him to talk about his past.

This fan fiction is my own version of Rooster Cogburn's life before the events of True Grit. I took parts from the novella where he told Mattie about his life and expanded on it a bit.
